The Delhi government has approved an additional subsidy of Rs 30,000 for installing 3 kW rooftop solar systems. This is over and above the Rs 78,000 subsidy provided by the central government under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), bringing the total subsidy support to Rs 108,000.

Households installing such systems can expect average monthly savings of around Rs 4,200. As of March 26, 2025, about 3,476 households in Delhi have availed the scheme, adding a cumulative rooftop solar capacity of nearly 10 MW.

This subsidy increase follows the allocation of Rs 500 million in Delhi’s state budget for rooftop solar promotion. The state aims to accelerate solar adoption and reduce electricity costs for residents. The government also plans to collaborate with financial institutions to offer low-cost financing options to reduce upfront investment barriers.

Earlier this month, the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) amended the Net Metering for Renewable Energy Guidelines, 2025. The new rules waive application and registration charges for domestic rooftop solar systems up to 10 kW. These changes, under Guideline 3(1) and 3(7), also exempt users from feasibility analysis fees.

The combined policy steps are expected to ease financial barriers and support broader adoption of rooftop solar in line with national clean energy goals.
