The Delhi government has asked distribution companies (discoms) to gear up for a record peak power demand of 9,000 MW expected this summer.
Discoms have been told to act on four fronts: anticipate demand, ensure readiness, secure adequate power supply, and manage faults and redundancy. To meet peak demand, power has been tied up through long-term, medium-term, and short-term purchase agreements based on projected loads. Discoms will also tap power exchanges to manage sudden spikes.
Advanced tools like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are being used to improve load forecasting accuracy. These systems will support faster and more accurate demand response.
The government has also directed discoms to keep emergency response teams on standby. This follows recent weather-related disruptions that tested the power infrastructure in the city.
BSES reported that storms damaged around 60 poles and 10 transformers or substations across south, west, east, and central Delhi. Fallen trees obstructed access, slowing restoration work.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd (DDL) reported that 13 high-tension and 43 low-tension poles broke, while 187 service lines were damaged in areas like Civil Lines, Wazirabad, and Burari. Around 257 trees fell, affecting both roads and power lines.
Discoms said emergency protocols were activated promptly, with teams working alongside civic agencies to clear debris and restore supply in phases using insulated equipment and safety gear.
