Construction has officially started in Singapore on the Ijmuiden Ver Beta offshore wind converter platform, a key component of the 2GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system for the Ijmuiden Ver Beta wind farm. This farm is a joint venture between Vattenfall and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The platform is set to be installed in the Dutch North Sea by 2028.
The steel-cutting ceremony took place at Seatrium’s Tuas Boulevard shipyard, with GE Vernova leading the HVDC system’s delivery. In collaboration with Seatrium, GE Vernova will oversee the platform’s engineering and manufacturing, combining its HVDC expertise with Seatrium’s offshore construction capabilities. The platform is part of TenneT’s 2GW program, aimed at boosting Europe’s offshore grid and supporting climate-neutral goals.
The GE Vernova-Seatrium consortium has secured a framework agreement for three Dutch platform projects, including Ijmuiden Ver Beta, Ijmuiden Ver Gamma, and Nederwiek 2, which will connect offshore wind energy to onshore converter stations in the Netherlands.
Samuel Wong, Seatrium’s executive vice president, highlighted the meticulous preparation that went into the project, enabling operational synergies for future platforms. The Ijmuiden Ver Beta platform marks a significant step in enhancing the Netherlands’ renewable energy capacity.
