Coal India’s June power sector supplies rise 5.9% to 51.44 MT

Coal India Limited (CIL) supplied 51.44 million tonnes (MTs) of coal to the power sector in June FY 2026-27, up 5.9% from 48.57 MTs in the corresponding month last year. The increase was driven by higher electricity demand during the peak summer season. The company also reported higher overall coal supplies and increased dispatches to the non-regulated sector during the month.

During the first quarter (Q1) of FY 2026-27, CIL supplied 154.75 MTs of coal to power plants, compared to 151.93 MTs in Q1 FY 2025-26, registering a growth of 1.8%.

Overall coal supplies

CIL’s total coal supplies increased by 7.5% to 65.8 MTs in June FY 2026-27 from 61.2 MTs in the same month last year.

During Q1 FY 2026-27, the company supplied 197.7 MTs of coal, up 3.5% from 191 MTs in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.

Coal supplies to the non-regulated sector rose 14.8% to 14.50 MTs in June FY 2026-27 from 12.63 MTs a year earlier. During Q1 FY 2026-27, supplies to the segment increased 10% to 43.10 MTs from 39.02 MTs in the corresponding period of FY 2025-26.

Inventory and logistics

Higher dispatches enabled CIL to reduce pithead coal stock by 28.3 MTs during Q1 FY 2026-27. According to the company, the inventory reduction was part of its strategy to improve inventory turnover, lower carrying costs and enhance supply chain efficiency through demand-synchronised mining and inventory optimisation.

Coal supplies through CIL’s first-mile connectivity (FMC) infrastructure increased by 23% during Q1 FY 2026-27, reaching 66.76 MT. The company said the increase reflects continued expansion of its coal evacuation infrastructure and improvements in operational efficiency.

CIL is progressing towards its production target of 815 MTs and coal supply target of 850 MTs for FY 2026-27.
