Coal India Limited (CIL) and GAIL (India) Limited have joined forces to establish Coal Gas India Limited, a joint venture aimed at developing a coal-to-synthetic natural gas (SNG) project at Eastern Coalfields.
The project leverages CIL’s coal resources and GAIL’s expertise in natural gas processing and distribution to convert coal into SNG, providing an alternative source of natural gas.
The Eastern Coalfields location offers access to significant coal reserves and existing infrastructure, supporting the viability of the project.
SNG, primarily composed of methane (CH₄), serves as a key feedstock for chemical and fertilizer production. The project is expected to reduce India’s natural gas imports, strengthen raw material security, and support the National Coal Gasification Mission and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
