Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has commissioned a 71 MWp DC (52 MW AC) solar power plant in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marking a further step in integrating renewable energy into its refining operations. The project was inaugurated by Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri at India Energy Week and is intended to support BPCL’s decarbonisation efforts.
The solar plant covers 210 acres and uses approximately 129,000 solar modules. It is connected to the grid via a 132 kV transmission line and is expected to generate 103.61 million units of electricity annually. The power generated will be supplied to BPCL’s refineries in Mumbai, Bina and Kochi.
According to BPCL, the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by about 75,150 metric tonnes annually. The plant forms part of the company’s strategy to directly source renewable power for energy-intensive refining operations and lower its overall carbon footprint.
The Prayagraj project follows BPCL’s earlier collaboration with Volks Energie to install solar plants with lithium iron phosphate battery storage for pipeline operations in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. These initiatives aim to ensure a stable renewable power supply for critical infrastructure across BPCL’s network.
The Prayagraj solar plant reflects the growing role of clean energy within traditional hydrocarbon businesses, while also contributing to Uttar Pradesh’s solar growth plans.
