BIS deadline extended for SPV inverters over 200 kW
Author: PPD Team Date: August 8, 2025
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has extended the implementation timeline for mandatory BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) compliance on certain solar inverters with capacities above 200 kW. The extension is applicable under the “Solar Systems, Devices and Components Goods Order, 2025”.
As per the ministry’s notification dated 5 August 2025, inverters listed as items 4 and 5 in the 2025 order will now be permitted for sale based on self-certification until 30 June 2026 or until further notice. The relaxation is intended to address limited testing infrastructure and provide manufacturers more time to comply.
This extension applies only to manufacturers that hold valid IEC certificates aligned with corresponding Indian standards. For item 4, these include IS 16221 (Part 2): 2015 / IEC 62109-2: 2011 and IS/IEC 61683: 1999. For item 5, required standards include IS 16221 (Part 2): 2015 / IEC 62109-2: 2011, IS 16169: 2019 / IEC 62116: 2014, and IS 17980: 2022 / IEC 62891: 2020. Manufacturers must also submit test reports from accredited laboratories.
The original order, S.O. 492(E) dated 27 January 2025, was to take effect 180 days from its publication, replacing the 2017 registration rules for solar PV components. That earlier framework has now been formally superseded, except for past actions taken under it.
