Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited (CSPGCL) for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) package of the 2×660 MW Korba West Supercritical Thermal Power Plant (STPP). The LoI was issued on March 27, 2025.
The project is an expansion of the existing Hasdeo Thermal Power Plant in the Korba district. The contract includes the supply of supercritical equipment such as boilers, turbines, and generators, along with associated auxiliaries, electrical systems, control and instrumentation, and balance-of-plant packages. It also covers civil works, erection, and commissioning.
BHEL is expected to complete the project within 60 months, targeting commercial operations within this period. The contract is valued at approximately Rs 118 billion, excluding taxes and duties.
CSPGCL has been developing the Hasdeo Thermal Power Plant in stages. The existing capacity stands at 1,340 MW, with units commissioned in three phases since 1983. The new expansion will require an additional 70.73 hectares of land, while the rest of the infrastructure will be utilized from the existing power plant.
Coal for the plant will be sourced from the Kusmunda coal mine, operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India.
