The Cabinet of Assam has approved the release of Rs 2.44 billion for land acquisition to upgrade the 220 kV grid substation of Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (AEGCL) at Sarusajai in Guwahati.

This move is part of Assam’s effort to strengthen its transmission infrastructure and support growing industrial demand. The substation renovation is expected to improve grid reliability and accommodate future load growth in the region.

In a parallel decision, the Cabinet approved a new thermal power generation policy aimed at positioning Assam as a thermal power hub by 2035. The state targets generation of 5,000 megawatts (MW) of thermal power, with 2,000 MW to be achieved by 2030. Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) has been designated the nodal agency for implementation.

The policy aims to attract private sector investment into thermal power, offering incentives to boost participation. This is part of a broader strategy to improve energy security, support industrial expansion, and reduce dependence on power imports.
