ABB to acquire Italian transformer manufacturer Specialtrasfo
ABB has signed an agreement to acquire Specialtrasfo S.p.A., an Italian manufacturer of specialised medium-voltage transformers with installations across more than 70 countries. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Founded in 1946 and headquartered in Agrate Brianza near Milan, Specialtrasfo operates three manufacturing facilities in northern Italy and employs around 130 people. The company reported revenues of about €80 million in 2025, with nearly half generated through its long-standing commercial relationship with ABB.
Following the acquisition, ABB plans to integrate Specialtrasfo into its Motion High Power division. The transaction is expected to close during the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.
ABB said the acquisition will strengthen its Motion business area by combining Specialtrasfo’s transformer portfolio with ABB’s existing motors and drives offerings to create an integrated powertrain solution.
Specialtrasfo’s products are used across sectors including energy, marine, metals, mining, industrial processing and offshore applications.
Juha Koskela said the acquisition will improve supply chain resilience for specialised transformers amid rising global demand linked to industrial electrification, expansion of data centres and growth in artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The acquisition comes alongside ABB’s broader manufacturing and expansion strategy in Europe. Recently, the company announced plans for a €200 million manufacturing investment programme across the region.
ABB also reported strong Q1 2026 results, with orders rising 32% year-on-year to $11,298 million and revenues increasing 18% to $8,734 million. Operational EBITA stood at $2,049 million with a margin of 23.5%, while income from operations reached $1,780 million at a margin of 20.4%. Basic earnings per share increased 21% to $0.73 and cash flow from operating activities rose 50% to $1,029 million.
