IEX electricity trading volume rises 7.7% to 13,527 MUs in July 2026

The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) recorded an electricity traded volume of 13,527 million units (MUs) in July 2026, registering a 7.7% year-on-year increase, supported by higher power demand across the country.

According to government data cited by the exchange, India’s energy consumption reached 170.70 billion units during the month, up 10.9% compared to July 2025. Strong demand also led to a 42.5% year-on-year increase in buy bids in the Day-Ahead Market (DAM), pushing the average market clearing price to Rs 4.99 per unit, 19.3% higher than a year earlier.

Market segments

The Real-Time Market (RTM) continued to record steady growth, with traded volume increasing 10.2% year-on-year to 5,631 MUs in July 2026 from 5,109 MUs in the corresponding month last year.

The Term-Ahead Market (TAM), comprising contingency, daily, weekly and monthly contracts, posted the highest growth among the electricity market segments. Traded volume nearly doubled to 1,774 MUs from 917 MUs in July 2025, representing a year-on-year increase of 93.4%.

In contrast, the Day-Ahead Market, including the High Price Day-Ahead Market (HP-DAM), recorded a traded volume of 5,087 MUs, down 7.7% from 5,510 MUs in July 2025.

Green market

Trading in IEX’s Green Market, which includes the Green Day-Ahead Market (G-DAM) and Green Term-Ahead Market (G-TAM), remained largely stable during the month.

The exchange recorded a traded volume of 1,035 MUs in July 2026, marginally higher than 1,025 MUs in July 2025. The weighted average price in G-DAM stood at Rs 3.75 per unit, declining 4.2% year-on-year.

REC trading

A total of 7.11 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) were traded on the exchange during July 2026, down 56.3% compared to the same month last year.

The exchange conducted REC trading sessions on July 8 and July 29, with market clearing prices of Rs 380 per REC and Rs 376 per REC, respectively.

According to IEX, sell bids declined by 77.8% year-on-year, resulting in higher clearing prices during the month. The next REC trading sessions are scheduled for August 12 and August 26, 2026.
