Iberdrola’s Australian subsidiary has commenced construction of the 376MW Broadsound Solar and 180MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Queensland. The project, expected to be completed by mid-2026, will generate power for 145,000 homes and create up to 350 jobs during its two-year construction phase.
Located near Rockhampton, the Broadsound project will be situated on the land of the Barada Kabalbara Yetimarala people, with Iberdrola establishing a community benefit fund to support local needs throughout construction and operation. The project aligns with Queensland’s renewable energy targets of sourcing 50% of electricity from renewables by 2030, 70% by 2032, and 80% by 2035.
Iberdrola has more than 2GW of renewable capacity in operation or construction in Australia, including the Aurora Green offshore wind project in Victoria.
Since 2022, Iberdrola has invested nearly A$3 billion ($2 billion) in Australia’s energy transition. The Australian Government aims for 82% of electricity generation to come from renewable sources by 2030, and forecasts suggest renewable capacity will surpass thermal generation by 2028.
