Offgrid Energy Labs inaugurates UK facility for ZincGel battery manufacturing
India-based Offgrid Energy Labs has inaugurated its first manufacturing facility in the United Kingdom for ZincGel®, its long-duration battery technology developed in India. The facility, located in Hook, Hampshire, was launched on July 7, 2026, and marks the company’s entry into commercial manufacturing outside India.
The company said the plant has an initial pilot manufacturing capacity of 10 MWh and is intended to support the deployment of long-duration energy storage technologies in international markets.
Manufacturing expansion
The Hook facility represents Offgrid Energy Labs’ first overseas manufacturing operation and comes as demand for long-duration energy storage continues to grow alongside renewable energy deployment.
According to the company, ZincGel® has been developed as an alternative battery chemistry aimed at reducing dependence on critical minerals while offering safer and scalable energy storage solutions. The technology is positioned for applications requiring longer-duration storage to support grid reliability and renewable energy integration.
The launch also reflects increasing collaboration between India and the United Kingdom in clean energy technologies, following the implementation of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement.
Technology focus
Offgrid Energy Labs stated that alternative battery chemistries are expected to play a larger role in future energy systems as countries seek to strengthen energy security and diversify supply chains for storage technologies.
Long-duration energy storage is increasingly viewed as a critical component of power systems with high renewable energy penetration, enabling electricity generated during periods of surplus to be stored and supplied during periods of lower generation.
The company said the new facility is intended to support the commercialisation and scaling of ZincGel® technology in global markets.
Industry support
Offgrid Energy Labs acknowledged the support of its investors, customers and collaborators in establishing the facility. The company specifically named Archean Chemical Industries Limited and Ankur Capital among its supporters.
The commissioning of the Hook facility marks a milestone in the commercial development of ZincGel® and represents an instance of battery technology developed in India being manufactured for international markets.
