Uttar Pradesh records India’s highest-ever peak power demand
Uttar Pradesh has recorded the highest peak electricity demand ever achieved by any state in India, with demand reaching 32,348 MW at 10:47 PM on June 21, 2026.
According to data released by the Uttar Pradesh State Load Dispatch Centre (UPSLDC), the new peak surpassed Maharashtra’s previous record of 32,317 MW recorded on May 13, 2026.
Demand rises through June
The new record follows a steady increase in electricity demand across Uttar Pradesh during June.
Peak demand stood at 27,260 MW on June 1 and crossed the 30,000 MW mark on June 6. Demand exceeded 31,000 MW on June 7 and reached 31,894 MW on June 10.
During the second half of the month, peak demand remained largely within the 31,000-31,500 MW range before rising to the record level of 32,348 MW on June 21.
Sharp daily variation
UPSLDC data also highlights significant variation between minimum and peak demand levels during the day.
On June 21, minimum demand fell to 24,755 MW at 6:15 AM before increasing by more than 7,500 MW to reach the day’s peak during late evening hours. The variation reflects the substantial ramp-up required by the power system to meet evening demand.
Drivers of demand growth
The rise in electricity demand has coincided with severe heatwave conditions across northern India, which have increased cooling requirements.
Higher agricultural power consumption for irrigation, expanding industrial activity, urbanisation and wider access to electricity have also contributed to growing demand in the state.
Maharashtra remains largest consumer
While Uttar Pradesh now holds the record for the highest peak power demand, Maharashtra continues to be the country’s largest electricity-consuming state in terms of total annual energy consumption.
The distinction reflects the difference between instantaneous peak demand and overall electricity usage, with Maharashtra’s large industrial base continuing to account for the highest aggregate consumption.
Grid operations
UPSLDC managed system operations during the record demand period and maintained power supply across the state while balancing the peak load requirement.
