BHEL secures Rs 21,000 crore Meja Stage-II EPC contract

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a Notification of Award (NOA) from Meja Urja Nigam Private Limited (MUNPL) for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) package of the 3×800 MW Meja Supercritical Thermal Power Project (STPP) Stage-II in Prayagraj district, Uttar Pradesh.

The contract value is over Rs 21,000 crore, excluding GST. The scope includes design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, construction, erection, testing, and commissioning of the 2,400 MW supercritical thermal power plant.

According to the company, the project is scheduled for completion within 70 months from the date of the NOA issued on June 4, 2026.

Joint venture structure

MUNPL is a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Limited and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (UPRVUNL).

NTPC Limited and UPRVUNL signed a Supplementary Joint Venture Agreement (SJVA)-III for MUNPL, according to a stock exchange filing dated June 4, 2026.

BHEL stated that the contract does not fall under related party transactions.

Thermal capacity addition

The Meja Stage-II project represents a significant addition to India’s thermal power generation pipeline and adds to BHEL’s order book in the supercritical equipment segment.

The award also follows another major international order secured by BHEL last week. The company signed a contract agreement with Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals Free Zone Enterprise for the design, manufacturing, supply, and supervision of erection and commissioning of eight gas turbine generator packages in Nigeria. The Nigeria order, valued between Rs 2,000 crore and Rs 2,500 crore, will support a petroleum refinery and polypropylene plant located in the Dangote Industries Free Zone.
