Coal India wins 80 MW BESS project from GRIDCO in Odisha

Coal India Limited (CIL) has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from GRIDCO Limited for developing 80 MW (320 MWh) of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Odisha, marking its entry into grid-scale energy storage.

The project involves setting up BESS facilities across two clusters under a build-own-operate model. The first cluster, covering Padampur and Bolangir, has been awarded at a tariff of Rs 3.04 lakh per MW per month. The second cluster, located at Bhatli and Basta, will operate at Rs 3.05 lakh per MW per month. The total project cost is estimated at around Rs 400 crore.

The execution timeline is 18 months from the signing of the Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA). Before signing, CIL is required to complete documentation within 20 days and submit a Performance Bank Guarantee (PBG).

The development reflects CIL’s diversification beyond coal mining into energy storage, with a focus on supporting renewable energy integration in Odisha’s grid. The company clarified that GRIDCO is not related to its promoter group and the transaction does not qualify as a related party transaction.
