Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister, K V Singh Deo, clarified that there has been no announcement of providing free electricity up to 300 units in the state. This statement came amidst demands for free electricity, which was one of the BJP’s election promises. Singh Deo, who also serves as the power minister, addressed concerns about misinformation being spread, particularly in parts of the Bargarh district, where some individuals have been removing electricity meters illegally.
Singh Deo emphasized that such actions are not only illegal but also pose significant safety risks. He pointed out that only trained and qualified technical personnel are authorized to handle the installation or removal of electricity meters, warning that any incidents resulting from unauthorized meter removal would hold the distribution company accountable.
In a statement to the assembly, Singh Deo clarified that the availability of up to 300 units of electricity is part of the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijlee Yojna, a central government initiative. This scheme offers a subsidy of Rs 78,000 for the installation of a 3 KW solar plant on rooftops, capable of generating more than 300 units of electricity per month. Singh Deo highlighted that this initiative allows consumers to significantly reduce their electricity bills through self-generation of solar power.
He urged electricity consumers to take advantage of the PM Suryaghar Muft Bijlee Yojna and encouraged local MLAs to assist residents in benefiting from this central government scheme.
