The Mumbai Urja Marg, an inter-state transmission system project initiated by the Ministry of Power, is ready for formal inauguration, aiming to deliver an additional 2,000 MW of power across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The 90-km Padgha-Kharghar transmission line, developed by Sterlite Power, is expected to significantly enhance the region’s power supply, supporting infrastructure growth and improving the quality of life.
The project, discussed in various meetings since 2016 and awarded through tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) in March 2020, faced delays but gained momentum after Maharashtra’s cabinet approved a new land-use policy for ultra-high voltage transmission lines in October 2022. This policy change expedited the project’s completion within 20 months.
