JSW Energy Limited said on 20 January 2026 that its wholly owned subsidiary, JSW Thermal Energy Two Limited, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) for a 1,600 MW thermal power project at Salboni in West Bengal.

The PPA covers a greenfield project comprising two units of 800 MW each, based on super and ultra supercritical technology. The project was awarded through a competitive bidding process and is scheduled to be commissioned within six years. The plant will use domestic coal. This is the second 1,600 MW PPA secured by JSW Energy with WBSEDCL for the Salboni site, following an earlier agreement signed in March 2025. With this, the company’s total contracted capacity at Salboni stands at 3,200 MW.

Recently, JSW Energy said its subsidiary, JSW Thermal Energy Limited, entered into a contract with associate company Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Limited for the supply of two 800 MW steam turbine generators for the Salboni project.

Commenting on the development, Sharad Mahendra, Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of JSW Energy, said the Salboni location offers strategic advantages due to its proximity to coal sources and operational synergies. He said the expansion supports the company’s role in strengthening India’s energy security.

JSW Energy said that after commissioning of the Salboni project and the proposed 1,800 MW expansion at the KSK Mahanadi plant, its total thermal capacity is expected to increase to around 10.7 GW. The company’s total locked-in generation capacity stands at 32.1 GW. JSW Energy is targeting 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage by 2030, and carbon neutrality by 2050.
