JSW Energy Limited has announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, JSW Thermal Energy Limited, has signed a contract with associate company Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Limited for the supply of two 800 MW steam turbine generators. The equipment will be deployed at the 1,600 MW Salboni thermal power project in West Bengal.
The contract provides for the manufacturing and supply of the turbine generator packages in line with the project’s construction schedule. JSW Energy said sourcing equipment from an associate company is intended to strengthen supply chain reliability, improve coordination during execution, and reduce exposure to industry-wide equipment shortages.
Following the commissioning of the Salboni project and a proposed 1,800 MW expansion at the KSK Mahanadi plant, JSW Energy’s total thermal capacity is expected to rise to 9,058 MW. This would represent around 30% of the company’s total locked-in generation capacity of 30.5 GW.
Joint Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sharad Mahendra said the contract supports execution certainty and reflects the long-standing partnership with Toshiba, which dates back to 2008. He also stated that the Salboni project would play a role in supporting India’s energy security and grid stability alongside the expansion of renewable energy capacity.
JSW Energy currently operates 13.3 GW of generation capacity, with 12.4 GW under construction across thermal and renewable segments. The company has set a target of achieving 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage by the financial year 2030, with a longer-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Salboni project has undergone multiple revisions since it was first proposed. In 2007, JSW Energy had signed an agreement with the then Left Front government to set up a 10 million tonne steel plant and a 1,600 MW captive coal-fired power plant at Salboni, with an estimated investment of Rs 35,000 crore. The plan stalled due to land issues, coal allocation challenges, and the impact of coal block deallocations, and the power purchase agreement was cancelled in 2014.
The project was revived in 2025, when JSW Energy signed a power purchase agreement with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited for a new greenfield 1,600 MW thermal power station at Salboni. A groundbreaking ceremony for the 2 x 800 MW project was held in April 2025.
