ArcelorMittal has announced that it will invest USD 900 million in three renewable energy projects in India with a combined capacity of 1 GW. The projects will increase the company’s global renewable energy capacity to 3.3 GW on completion.
The projects will be located in Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, with power supplied to AMNS India, the steelmaking joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. The portfolio includes a 36 MW solar project in Amaravati, Maharashtra, targeted for completion in H1 2027. A 400 MW solar project with a 500 MWh battery energy storage system is planned in Bikaner, Rajasthan, while an integrated project in Bachau, Gujarat, will comprise 250 MW of wind, 300 MW of solar, and 300 MWh of battery storage. Both are scheduled for completion in H1 2028.
The company said the projects will double its renewable energy capacity in India to 2 GW and are expected to deliver annual carbon dioxide savings of about 1.6 million tonnes. Power from these assets will support AMNS India’s steelmaking operations.
Separately, AMNS India is developing a 550 MW renewable energy project in Bachau, Gujarat, comprising 300 MW of solar and 250 MW of wind capacity, with expected annual carbon dioxide savings of about 0.9 million tonnes.
