CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre (CSIR-SERC) in Chennai has developed a hybrid floating platform that generates both wind and solar power from a single structure. The system can be deployed in offshore and inland water bodies, unlocking new surfaces for clean energy.
The platform combines horizontal-axis and compact vertical-axis wind turbines with solar PV panels. Vertical turbines are placed between the larger horizontal units to capture wind from all directions, improving space use and total output. Its “partially compliant configuration” ensures the structure is strong enough to support equipment while flexing with waves to prevent damage.
The design builds on CSIR-SERC’s earlier work on semisubmersible floating wind platforms and modular floating solar PV systems. Extensive laboratory and numerical testing validated the hybrid platform. N Anandavalli, director of CSIR-SERC, said it offers a practical solution to expand India’s renewable energy capacity using offshore and inland water surfaces.

Author: PPD Team Date: August 20, 2025 The Ministry of Power has issued a notification revising the capital expenditure limit for hydro power projects that require clearance from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA). According to the notification, hydro generating schemes with an estimated cost exceeding Rs 3,000 crore will now require CEA concurrence. This replaces the earlier threshold notified in April 2006. The order also clarifies that off-stream closed-loop pumped storage projects will not require…
Author: PPD Team Date: April 8, 2025 Tata Power has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to install a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai. The project will be completed over the next two years. The system includes advanced ‘black start’ functionality. This feature allows a quick restoration of power to key infrastructure—such as the metro, hospitals, the airport, and data centers—during grid failures. It is aimed at preventing…
