India and Nepal advance cross-border power transmission projects

India and Nepal have signed key agreements to develop high-capacity cross-border transmission corridors, strengthening electricity trade and regional energy cooperation.

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) and the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) formalised pacts to establish two joint venture entities, one in each country, for implementing the planned projects. The agreements were signed in the presence of India’s Power Minister Manohar Lal and Nepal’s Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Kulman Ghising in New Delhi.

The projects include the 400 kV double circuit (quad moose) Inaruwa–New Purnea transmission link and the 400 kV double circuit (quad moose) Lamki Dododhara–Bareilly line. These links are expected to expand power exchange between India and Nepal, strengthen regional grid connectivity, and enhance energy security across South Asia.

The joint venture model will oversee the development, construction, and operation of the transmission corridors on both sides of the border. Once commissioned, the lines will enable greater power flow between the two nations, improving grid stability and supporting regional growth.

Earlier, on April 22, 2025, POWERGRID and NEA signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly develop the same two 400 kV double circuit transmission lines: Inaruwa (Nepal)–New Purnea (India) and Dododhara (Nepal)–Bareilly (India).
