The Telangana government is preparing to establish a new electricity distribution company by restructuring the Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (NPDCL) and the Southern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Limited (SPDCL). The new entity will focus on supplying power to agriculture, lift irrigation projects, drinking water systems, and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) region.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to prepare a detailed plan that includes allocation of power purchase agreements, distribution of assets, and settlement of financial dues.
In parallel, the government is moving ahead with the underground power cabling project in Hyderabad. The chief minister has asked for finalised plans by December and set a target to complete cabling in the city’s core urban areas within two and a half years.
He also directed the department to upgrade existing substations, construct new ones, and ensure that no facility operates beyond its load capacity. The plan includes expanding substation capacity where needed, identifying new sites, and incorporating advanced technology in urban substations.
