Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has started development of its first utility-scale solar power project, planned to generate up to 150 MW of electricity. The facility will be located near Bilaj Al Jazayer in the southern region and will cover about 1.2 square kilometres.
EWA stated that the plant will use advanced solar technology to maximise efficiency. Commercial operations are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2027. Once operational, it is expected to supply electricity to about 6,300 homes and reduce annual carbon emissions by over 100,000 tonnes.
A consortium will provide advisory services during the project’s development. KPMG Fakhro will serve as financial advisor, WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff as technical advisor, and Trowers & Hamlins as legal advisor.
The project is part of the country’s National Renewable Energy Plan, which targets a 20 per cent share of clean energy in the national mix by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.
