Arunachal Pradesh targets 13 new hydropower projects

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on July 31, 2025, described the state as the “emerging hydropower capital of India”, citing its 56,000 MW potential and the transformative role of the power sector in driving development.
In a social media post, Khandu said Arunachal Pradesh is positioning itself as the country’s energy engine while demonstrating that natural beauty and infrastructure can coexist. He highlighted that key projects long stuck in planning are now moving toward execution.
The 600 MW Kameng project has been completed. The 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project is close to commissioning. The 2,880 MW Dibang project, set to be India’s largest hydroelectric plant, is progressing steadily.
According to Khandu, 13 additional projects with a combined capacity of 15,000 MW are expected over the next three years. Â
He said the state will receive Rs 4,171 crore worth of free power, directly strengthening its internal revenue. Another Rs 735 crore is earmarked for community development, including infrastructure and welfare. Annual dividends of Rs 1,884 crore are also projected from these projects.
