Delhi to install rooftop solar on 989 buildings

Author: PPD Team Date: July 11, 2025

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is planning to install rooftop solar power systems on 989 of its municipal buildings. The initiative will be implemented by NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) under the Renewable Energy Service Company (RESCO) model.

The rooftop systems are expected to have a combined capacity between 10 MW and 15 MW. Electricity generated from these installations will be supplied at a tariff ranging from Rs 4.25 to Rs 4.92 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).

This effort is part of a larger solar initiative by NVVN, which had earlier invited bids in August 2024 to develop a total of 25.65 MW of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on government buildings, including those used by Delhi Police. The spare capacity from that tender will now be used to serve MCD’s requirements.

Power Peak Digest reported a few days back that the Delhi government is planning a floating solar project on the Munak Canal. The canal spans 17 kilometres within Delhi and is a key water supply source.
