The Polish Government has announced a nearly €5 billion ($5.46 billion) loan programme to support offshore wind projects, funded by the EU’s recovery funds. State-owned bank BKG will provide the loans, which are available for projects with a minimum installed capacity of 300MW. Developers can apply for loans until 31 August 2026, with a maximum repayment period extending to 2053.

The programme aims to add 5.9GW of offshore wind capacity in Poland by 2030, a 63% increase in the country’s current wind generation capacity, which stood at 9.4GW in 2023. Key developers involved include state-owned utility PGE, sustainable energy firm Ørsted, oil refiner Orlen, and power producer Northern Power.

This initiative is part of Poland’s broader national recovery plan, focusing on rebuilding its socioeconomic structure post-pandemic and meeting revised energy goals. The country aims to generate 50% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, with wind power currently accounting for 14% of total electricity generation.

The loan programme does not require European Commission approval, streamlining the process for developers to expand Poland’s renewable energy infrastructure.
