CEA launches electrical safety handbook

On 26 June 2025, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), under the Ministry of Power, observed Electrical Safety Day in New Delhi with a clear message: safety must go hand in hand with innovation. The theme, Smart Energy, Safe Nation, underlined the growing need to embed safety in every layer of India’s energy transition.
The key highlight was the launch of the first-ever Electrical Safety Handbook. Jointly developed by CEA and BSES, the handbook serves as a practical guide for technicians, consumers, and utility staff. It outlines do’s and don’ts for safely handling Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), rooftop solar systems, and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
With India rapidly deploying these technologies, risks like shocks, fires, and electrical faults are rising. The handbook is designed to reduce such incidents by offering simple, actionable steps for everyday situations—whether at home, on the road, or in the workplace.
To support public outreach, CEA also introduced Suraksha Shakti, a mascot meant to build safety awareness using relatable messaging. Despite some printing errors in its slogan—“Handle electricity with care, always stay aware!”—the intent was clear: everyone needs to stay alert around electricity.
CEA plans to hold pledge ceremonies, distribute the handbook widely, and extend outreach through schools, industries, and housing societies. The goal is to turn electrical safety into a shared habit.
As India upgrades its grid and accelerates the adoption of clean tech, safety remains a non-negotiable. The CEA’s new handbook offers a clear reminder: smart systems need smart practices to stay safe.
