Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Ltd (TNGECL) has awarded 1 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity under a competitive tender floated in March 2025.

NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL), a wholly owned subsidiary of NLC India Ltd, secured the largest share—250 MW / 500 MWh—across three sites: Ottapidaram, Annpankulam, and Kayathar. This is NLCIL’s first large-scale grid-connected BESS project. The systems will provide two full charge-discharge cycles daily and be developed under the build-own-operate (BOO) model for 12 years.

Bondada Engineering Ltd was awarded 200 MW / 400 MWh for two substations—Vellaviduthi and Thennampatti. This is Bondada’s largest storage contract to date.

Oriana Power won a 50 MW / 100 MWh BESS project under the same tender.

The projects will receive viability gap funding (VGF), capped at Rs 27 lakh per MWh or 30% of project cost, whichever is lower.

The tariffs quoted were:

  • Rs 2.46 lakh per MW per month – Bondada and Oriana

  • Rs 2.48 lakh per MW per month – NLC

The projects will support Tamil Nadu’s goal of 50% renewable energy by 2030 and align with India’s energy storage policy framework.
