Meta backs 150MW geothermal project in New Mexico

Meta has signed a deal with XGS Energy to develop a 150 megawatt (MW) geothermal project in New Mexico. The project will support Meta’s growing energy needs, especially as it expands its data centre and AI infrastructure in the state.

The geothermal energy will be delivered through the PNM (Public Service Company of New Mexico) electric grid. The project will roll out in two phases, both expected to be online by 2030.

XGS Energy is a US-based geothermal technology firm. Its closed-loop system extracts heat from deep underground rocks without relying on water or specific rock formations. This overcomes key limits of traditional geothermal methods, which often depend on rare geological conditions.

New Mexico currently has only one operating geothermal plant. This new 150MW project could increase the state’s geothermal output tenfold. It also aligns with the broader trend of tech companies looking for reliable, carbon-free energy sources to power AI development.
