The Provincial Government of Binh Dinh has proposed the inclusion of the 15 MW Hoi Van geothermal power project in Vietnam’s national power development plan VIII (PDP8).
The project, to be located in Cat Hiep commune, Phu Cat district, requires an estimated investment of USD32.7 million. It is intended to diversify the province’s energy mix and contribute to national renewable energy targets.
Geothermal energy is still at an early stage in Vietnam, but the country’s volcanic terrain provides promising potential. The Hoi Van project is part of a broader plan to add 45 MW of geothermal and other new energy capacity in Binh Dinh by 2045.
The project is expected to help cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy access, especially in remote areas.
Vietnam’s current electricity mix is dominated by fossil fuels (56%), while hydropower leads its clean sources at 31%. Wind and solar account for 13%, below the global average of 15%. Vietnam aims to reach 47% renewable electricity by 2030, which remains below the 60% benchmark set in the IEA Net Zero Emissions scenario.
