Chevron USA and Engine No.1 have joined forces to create a new company for developing natural gas-fired power plants to support US-based AI data centres, in collaboration with GE Vernova.
This initiative addresses the increasing demand for affordable and reliable energy essential for AI development in the US.
The project aims to deliver up to 4GW of power by 2027, with the potential for future growth. The first multi-gigawatt-scale power plant and data centre, called “power foundries,” will utilize seven GE Vernova 7HA turbines across the Southeast, Midwest, and West regions. The generated power will not initially flow through the existing transmission grid, preventing consumer electricity price hikes.
The projects will also focus on integrating lower carbon solutions, including carbon capture and storage, capable of capturing 90% of CO₂ emissions from turbines, alongside renewable energy sources.
This development follows a similar partnership in January 2025 between NextEra Energy and GE Vernova for natural gas-fired power projects for AI data centres.
