Indonesia aims to boost its power capacity by 71 GW by 2034, with a significant emphasis on private sector investment.
The government, in collaboration with PT PLN (Persero), will prioritize the development of transmission lines to support renewable energy generation, according to Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.
The strategy is part of PLN’s 2025-2034 power supply plan, which includes 48,000km of circuit transmission lines, supporting 60% of new power plants to be developed by private entities, as reported by Reuters. The country’s abundant natural resources such as sunlight, water, and wind will be harnessed, though current transmission lines need upgrades to support these renewable energy sources.
Indonesia’s installed power capacity stands at 101GW, with 75GW managed by PLN. Currently, 15% of the energy mix comes from renewables, and the rest is dominated by coal. The country plans to source 70% of new power plants from renewable energy, including potential nuclear and hydrogen sources.
The government is considering small modular reactors and conventional nuclear technologies as part of its goal to reduce fossil fuel reliance.
