The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has exported electricity valued at Rs 13.04 billion during the first five months of the fiscal year 2024/25. From July 16 to December 15, 2024, approximately 1.76 billion units of electricity were sold to India, primarily during the rainy season.

The NEA has been exporting surplus electricity at competitive rates in the Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) and through bilateral agreements with Haryana and Bihar. The average export price was Rs 7.39 per unit, yielding Rs 8.15 billion in revenue.

In terms of monthly exports, the highest was Rs 4.15 billion during Shrawan (July 16 to August 16), while the lowest was Rs 281.4 million in Mangsir (November 16 to December 15). Exports decreased due to damage caused by floods and landslides to the 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project in late September, leading to a halt in its production from September 28.

Currently, due to decreased generation in the winter months and the ongoing effects of hydropower shutdowns, Nepal has begun importing electricity to meet domestic demand. NEA aims to export Rs 30 billion worth of electricity in the current fiscal year, although this target is likely to be affected by the ongoing damage to hydropower projects and transmission lines.

In addition to exports to India, NEA has also started exporting 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh via India.
