SSE Renewables has acquired development rights from Low Carbon’s Grid Systems Services for a 120MW/240MWh grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) project in County Offaly, Ireland.
The Thornsberry BESS project near Tullamore has received planning consent and grid connection approval, enabling 120MW import/export capacity to the national grid.
Once operational, the system could supply backup power for 115,000 homes for up to two hours. Subject to a final investment decision, the project may be completed by 2030, potentially creating jobs and boosting the Midlands’ economy through local services and development contributions.
Heather Donald, SSE Renewables’ director of onshore wind, solar, and battery for the UK and Ireland, emphasized the project’s alignment with SSE’s net zero goals, while Low Carbon CEO Roy Bedlow highlighted their ongoing role in the Irish storage market.
