Google has signed a master plant development agreement with Kairos Power to generate clean energy for its AI data centres using small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs). The agreement outlines a plan to deploy 500MW of advanced nuclear power projects across the US by 2035.
Kairos Power will oversee the development, construction, and operation of a series of advanced reactor plants, providing Google with energy, ancillary services, and environmental attributes through power purchase agreements. The first reactor is expected to be operational by 2030, strategically supplying clean electricity directly to Google’s data centres.
This collaboration is part of Google’s broader clean energy strategy, which includes solar and wind power, and aims to achieve 24/7 carbon-free energy. Google Energy and Climate senior director Michael Terrell highlighted that this partnership will accelerate the transition to clean energy, contributing to Google’s net-zero and carbon-free energy goals.
