Waaree Energies Limited has begun construction of a 10 GW integrated solar ingot and wafer manufacturing facility at Butibori in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The company stated that the project will be the largest solar ingot and wafer manufacturing complex in India.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis along with the company’s leadership.
The facility will be developed over 300 acres with an estimated investment of around Rs 6,200 crore. It will manufacture high-purity solar ingots and wafers, which are upstream components in the solar photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing chain and are used before the production of solar cells and modules.
Once operational, the plant is expected to generate more than 8,000 direct and indirect jobs in the region.
Hitesh Doshi, Chairman and Managing Director of Waaree Energies, said the project aims to reduce India’s reliance on imported solar manufacturing inputs and strengthen the domestic solar supply chain. He noted that Nagpur was selected due to its industrial infrastructure and central connectivity.
The project marks Waaree Energies’ expansion further upstream in the solar manufacturing value chain. The company currently operates solar PV module manufacturing capacity of about 22.3 GW globally and solar cell manufacturing capacity of up to 5.4 GW.
The proposed ingot and wafer facility is expected to supply upstream materials for the company’s downstream solar manufacturing operations.
The company did not specify a timeline for commissioning of the facility.
