Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Shri Manohar Lal reviewed the power sector scenario for the Union Territory (UT) of Lakshadweep in Kavaratti.
Shri Praful Patel, Administrator of Lakshadweep, along with senior officials from the UT administration, Government of India (GoI), and Power Finance Corporation (PFC), attended the meeting.
Key issues discussed included the status of power generation, the performance of the electricity department, demand-supply challenges, and the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. The meeting also covered the progress of a ground-mounted solar project and a proposed floating solar plant.
Shri Praful Patel requested approval for projects to interconnect the islands through submarine cables, emphasizing its necessity for a consistent power supply. He also highlighted the need for modernization of the transmission and distribution systems under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
Shri Lal emphasized the need for solar-based Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations and proposed a pilot for solar-powered boats. He encouraged the greening select islands like Agatti-Bangaram, Minicoy, and Kadmat and assured continued support from the Government of India.
