The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), along with Argo Infrastructure Partners and Brookfield Asset Management, has finalized a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for carbon-free energy from the Smoky Mountain Hydroelectric facilities.
The agreement covers four hydroelectric dams—Cheoah, Calderwood, Chilhowee, and Santeetlah—jointly owned by Argo and Brookfield.
Starting in 2025, Smoky will deliver over 14 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually to TVA customers, supporting TVA’s commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. The 377-megawatt portfolio generates an average of 1.4 million megawatt-hours annually, equivalent to avoiding 1.1 million tons of CO2 emissions each year.
This partnership highlights the region’s focus on renewable energy and carbon reduction, catering to growing energy demands driven by data centers, manufacturing, and electrification. TVA, Argo, and Brookfield executives emphasized the deal’s alignment with energy transition goals and the ability of hydro assets to provide reliable, scalable clean power.
