Torrent Power Limited has received a Letter of Award (LoA) from MP Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) to supply electricity from a proposed 1,600 MW coal-based thermal project in Madhya Pradesh. The disclosure was made on August 30, 2025.
The project will consist of a 2×800 MW ultra-supercritical greenfield power plant to be developed under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model. Torrent Power quoted a tariff of Rs 5.829 per kilowatt-hour in the competitive bidding process conducted by MPPMCL. Coal for the plant will be provided by MPPMCL under the Ministry of Coal’s SHAKTI policy. The commissioning timeline is 72 months from the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).
The company said the project will involve an investment of about Rs 22,000 crore, marking the single largest investment by the Torrent Group in the power sector. The plant will use ultra-supercritical technology to improve efficiency and reduce emissions compared to conventional coal-based facilities.
According to Torrent Power, the project is expected to create between 8,000 and 10,000 jobs during the construction phase and about 1,500 jobs during operations.
Following the addition of this capacity, Torrent Power’s portfolio will include around 9.6 gigawatts (GWp) of locked-in generation and 3 GW of pumped storage. This comprises 4.9 GWp of installed capacity, 3.1 GWp of renewable projects under development, 1.6 GW of thermal capacity, and 3 GW of pumped storage capacity.
