Tongyeong Eco Power’s 1GW LNG Plant begins operations in South Korea
Tongyeong Eco Power’s combined-cycle power plant has commenced commercial operations in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea, with a capacity exceeding 1GW, supplying electricity to nearly one million households. The liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fueled plant aligns with South Korea’s strategy to transition from coal to LNG and includes a 200,000 cubic meter LNG storage tank.
GE Vernova has provided critical components for the plant, including two 7HA.02 gas turbines, one STF-D600 steam turbine, two heat recovery steam generators (HRSG), and three H65 generators. Additionally, GE Vernova will offer 17 years of maintenance services for the turbines and generators to ensure ongoing efficiency and reliability.
The HA gas turbines from GE Vernova are projected to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 3.3 metric tonnes annually per unit, equating to the removal of approximately 680,000 cars from the road. With a longstanding partnership of over 45 years with South Korean companies, GE Vernova supports the nation’s energy transition, contributing over 14GW of power generation capacity in South Korea with more than 80 installed gas turbines.
GE Vernova Asia Gas Power president and CEO Ramesh Singaram noted that the start of Tongyeong Eco Power’s commercial operations highlights a shift towards efficient energy solutions in a market heavily dependent on fossil fuels, where coal and oil still account for nearly 60% of power needs.
