Power Minister virtually commenced Commercial Operation of Tehri Pumped Storage Project.

THDC India Limited has begun commercial operation of the third unit of the Tehri Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant. The 250 MW unit is part of the 1,000 MW project, which is now the largest variable speed pumped storage plant developed by a central public sector enterprise. The Commercial Operation Date was commenced virtually from New Delhi by Manohar Lal, Minister of Power.

The Minister said the commissioning of the 250 MW unit marks an important step for India’s first variable speed pumped storage plant. He said the project strengthens the clean energy transition and supports national goals for a developed India by 2047. He highlighted the role of pumped storage in providing reliable power and grid stability as renewable energy additions increase.

Shripad Y Naik, Minister of State for Power, noted THDC India Limited’s position in pumped storage and its contribution to energy security. Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, also commended the company for its recent commissioning record.

The Tehri pumped storage plant incorporates variable speed technology and high round trip efficiency. THDC India Limited said the plant sets a benchmark for advanced hydropower and supports India’s clean energy goals. The event was attended by senior officials including Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority, Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, and Sipan Kumar Garg, Chairman and Managing Director of THDC India Limited.
