THDC India Limited has synchronised the first 250 MW unit of its 1,000 MW pumped storage project (PSP) at Tehri, Uttarakhand, in pump condenser mode.
In pump condenser mode, the turbine acts both as a generator and a condenser. It helps generate electricity and also regulates grid stability by absorbing excess energy without producing power, enhancing operational flexibility.
The Tehri PSP consists of four reversible pump turbine units of 250 MW each. Once all units are commissioned, it will increase the total installed capacity of the Tehri Hydro Power Complex to 2,400 MW.
Currently, THDC India Limited operates the 1,000 MW Tehri Hydro Power Project (HPP) and the 400 MW Koteshwar Hydro Electric Project (HEP) at the complex. The project is being developed by THDC India Limited, a joint venture (JV) of NTPC Limited and the Government of Uttar Pradesh (GoUP).
Earlier, THDC India Limited had synchronised Unit I of the Tehri Pumped Storage Plant Project with the National Grid on November 19, 2024.
