THDC begins commercial operation process for second unit of Tehri PSP

Author: PPD Team Date: July 8, 2025

THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has initiated the commercial operation date (COD) process for the second unit of its Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Uttarakhand. The 250 MW unit is part of the 1,000 MW Tehri PSP project.

The milestone was virtually inaugurated by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power.

The Tehri PSP is India’s first variable speed pumped storage facility. It is also the largest pumped storage project implemented by a central public sector enterprise.

The first unit entered commercial operations in June 2025. With the second unit now progressing towards COD, THDC moves closer to completing the full 1,000 MW project.

The plant consists of four reversible units of 250 MW each. These provide crucial flexibility for peaking power generation, helping maintain grid stability as renewable energy penetration grows.

Once all four units are operational, the Tehri Hydro Power Complex will reach a total capacity of 2,400 MW, making it the largest hydropower complex in India.
