Telangana to launch new DISCOM for free power schemes

Author: PPD Team Date: July 31, 2025

The Telangana government will set up a new power distribution company (DISCOM) to manage free electricity schemes and ease the financial burden on existing utilities. The new entity will operate alongside the current Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGNPDCL) and Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TGSPDCL).

The proposed DISCOM will have State-wide jurisdiction and will exclusively handle free electricity programmes, including supply to agricultural consumers, the 200 free units for households, and power for schools and colleges.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to restructure the power supply system and explore options to refinance existing loans at reduced interest rates. He also directed the administration to prepare proposals for installing solar systems across government schools, colleges, and offices. District Collectors have been asked to identify suitable government buildings for solar installations.

The State plans to equip the Secretariat with solar-powered infrastructure, including rooftop panels on parking areas and solar fencing. As part of the Indira Giri Jala Vikasam scheme, 2.1 lakh Scheduled Tribe farmers are expected to receive solar-powered pump sets.
