Tata Power has received approval from the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) to install a 100 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Mumbai. The project will be completed over the next two years.

The system includes advanced ‘black start’ functionality. This feature allows a quick restoration of power to key infrastructure—such as the metro, hospitals, the airport, and data centers—during grid failures. It is aimed at preventing widespread blackouts and improving grid resilience.

The BESS will manage reactive power and help meet peak demand more efficiently. With high ramp-rate capability, it will balance supply during high-consumption hours and reduce power purchase costs. By charging during low-cost periods and discharging during high-cost periods, it can lead to lower tariffs for consumers.

The storage system will also help defer capital expenditure on major grid upgrades by using stored energy to manage demand fluctuations. It will provide ancillary services such as voltage support and frequency regulation.

Tata Power plans to install the 100 MW system across 10 sites, mainly near load centres. These will be centrally monitored from the Power System Control Center (PSCC). The company is also working toward integrating the system with a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) to improve performance.

Tata Power’s initiative supports Mumbai’s shift to cleaner energy and a more stable power system.
