Tata Power has commissioned the final two transmission lines under the South East UP Power Transmission Company Limited (SEUPPTCL) project, completing the entire extra high voltage network across Uttar Pradesh.

The two lines commissioned are the 400 kV Tanda-Gonda and 400 kV Gonda-Basti double circuit lines, covering 154 circuit kilometres. The completed network now comprises three 765 kV lines (951 circuit kilometres), fourteen 400 kV lines (566 circuit kilometres), and three 765/400 kV substations with a combined transformation capacity of 3,460 MVA.

Together with the previously commissioned 765 kV Mainpuri-Bara and Mainpuri-Unnao single circuit lines, the 17 corridors spanning 1,517 circuit kilometres can support evacuation of over 4,000 MW of thermal power generated within the state, strengthening grid stability across the region.

Construction involved more than 45,000 metric tonnes of tower steel, over 8,600 kilometres of conductors, and 139 critical crossings including railway tracks, gas pipelines, highways, and rivers.

With this project now fully operational, Tata Power’s total transmission network stands at 5,466 circuit kilometres, with a further 1,863 circuit kilometres under construction.

Background

SEUPPTCL was incorporated in September 2009 as a subsidiary of Mainpuri Power Transmission Pvt Ltd. The project was originally awarded to Spanish firm Isolux Corsan in July 2011 through tariff-based competitive bidding by UPPTCL, under a 35-year transmission service agreement with four Uttar Pradesh discoms. The project ran into financial difficulties and was subsequently resolved under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016.

Resurgent Power Ventures, a Singapore-based joint venture, acquired SEUPPTCL through competitive bidding, completing the acquisition in September 2022. Tata Power holds a 26% stake in Resurgent Power through its subsidiary TPIPL, ICICI Bank holds 10%, and global investors hold the remaining 64%.
