Fidra Energy and Sungrow partner on 4.4GWh BESS projects in the UK

Sungrow announced that it has signed a strategic agreement with Fidra Energy to deliver 4.4 GWh of energy storage capacity.

This is part of Fidra’s goal to establish a 10GW battery energy storage system (BESS) platform across the UK and Europe by 2030.

Sungrow will supply its PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled energy storage system and provide long-term maintenance services for two flagship UK projects under this partnership.

The first installation will be at Fidra’s Thorpe Marsh site in South Yorkshire, set to become one of the largest battery storage facilities globally. With a two-hour initial capacity expandable to four hours, it is expected to power up to 800,000 UK homes during peak demand. Construction at Thorpe Marsh will commence in 2025.

The second site, West Burton C in Nottinghamshire, will have the capacity to power up to 300,000 homes during peak hours. Construction at West Burton C is scheduled to begin in 2026.

Chris Elder, CEO of Fidra Energy, emphasized the importance of large-scale battery storage in Europe’s energy transition and praised Sungrow’s technology and partnership.

Sungrow’s Senior Vice President, James Wu, highlighted the advanced capabilities of the PowerTitan 2.0 system, including enhanced grid stability and participation in the ancillary services market, aligning with the UK’s renewable energy goals.

Sungrow has been recognized on the Forbes China Top 50 Most Innovative Companies list for 2024.
