Solar energy became the leading source of electricity generation in the European Union (EU) during the second quarter of 2025. Renewable sources produced 54% of the EU’s net electricity, up from 52.7% in the same period of 2024, according to EU data.

Solar power contributed 122,317 gigawatt hours (GWh), representing 19.9% of total electricity generation. In June 2025, solar accounted for 22% of electricity in the EU, surpassing nuclear at 21.6%, wind at 15.8%, hydroelectric at 14.1%, and natural gas at 13.8%.

Among EU countries, Denmark recorded the highest share of renewables in net electricity generation at 94.7%, followed by Latvia at 93.4%, Austria at 91.8%, Croatia at 89.5%, and Portugal at 85.6%. Slovakia, Malta, and Czechia reported the lowest shares at 19.9%, 21.2%, and 22.1%, respectively.

Fifteen EU countries increased their renewable energy share in Q2 2025 compared to the previous year. Luxembourg and Belgium saw the largest gains, rising 13.5 and 9.1 percentage points, driven mainly by solar expansion.

Overall, 36.8% of electricity from renewable sources came from solar, 29.5% from wind, 26.0% from hydro, 7.3% from combustible renewable fuels, and 0.4% from geothermal energy.
